Furniture by Thonet in Bauhaus style
Thonet is probably one of the best-known and most traditional furniture manufacturers, representing the Bauhaus style with timeless and functional design. Founded in 1819 by Michael Thonet, his basic idea of reducing form and material to the essentials became the maxim for Bauhaus architects, especially after the First World War.
Among the most famous designs in the Bauhaus style are the tubular steel seating furniture and tables with which Marcel Breuer, among others, experimented in the mid-1920s. The material prevailed due to its elastic and at the same time strong properties and thus became a popular material for Bauhaus architects.
The manufacturer Thonet quickly recognized the potential of tubular steel furniture and acquired rights to designs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam or Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer, among others. Thonet still produces the Bauhaus classics today and thus brings a piece of the formative history of design into its own four walls.
