TASCHEN Verlag Books about art, architecture and design
The history of TASCHEN Verlag began in 1980 in Cologne, when Benedikt Taschen founded the small store TASCHEN COMICS, where he wanted to sell comic books. Soon the first catalogs were printed and employees were hired.
In 1984, almost broke, Benedikt Taschen borrowed money and bought 40,000 remaining copies of an English Magritte illustrated book, all of which he sold. Soon further rights are acquired and books are sold. The publishing house quickly occupied the niche of high-quality yet inexpensive books and is still successful in this segment today.
"We have two priorities at TASCHEN: To produce fantastic and innovative books and to sell them all over the world at fair prices. We don't follow trends - we create them."
Meanwhile, the TASCHEN Verlag now offers a wide range of illustrated books and entire series on various topics such as design, art, photography and eroticism. The comic book store has developed into an international company with subsidiaries and stores all over the world.
