Aesthetics of geometric discreetness
Stripes have always been an integral part of Marimekko's pattern world. The Kalasääski design takes this concept and executes the geometric aesthetic in a new way. The design showcases the art of freehand patterns of vertical and diagonal stripes and is named after the osprey (Kalasääski in Finnish). The color execution as well as the arrangement of the lines are reminiscent of a bird in flight position. The design was created in 1962 by Maija Isola.
