Sebastian Herkner is Designer of the Year 2019

Every year, the Paris lifestyle fair Maison & Objet names a designer of the year. This year the committee presents the coveted award to the German designer Sebastian Herkner.

After successful studies at the HfG Offenbach, Herkner founded his own studio in Offenbach am Main in 2006. Since then the designer has realised designs for international companies such as ClassiCon , Thonet , Pulpo and many more. Three years ago, as Guest of Honor of IMM Cologne, he inspired the design scene with his vision of the exhibition space Das Haus .

Herkner's designs surprise, do not follow trends and sometimes even go against them. His curiosity for new technologies combined with his love for traditional design creates timeless, extraordinary products.

The social component is another important aspect for the designer. For Sebastian Herkner it is a great enrichment to explore local crafts in different countries.

As part of the Basket Case project, Herkner visited the Binga Craft Centre in Zimbabwe in 2015. The visual arts and design project enables European and African artists to create new designs in collaboration with local basket weavers. A unique opportunity to exchange knowledge.

Only one year later the designer designed the Fibra collection for the German design brand Ames . During his trip through Colombia, Herkner visited local craftsmen and was fascinated by their culture. In order to bring Colombia's craftsmanship into our living rooms, the designer created the woven baskets.

We congratulate Sebastian Herkner and look forward to many more extraordinary works!
