Imaginative artist
Bjørn Wiinblad was a Danish artist and graphic designer. Born in 1918 in Copenhagen, Wiinblad showed early talent for drawing and creating imaginative worlds. Aged 17, he began an apprenticeship as a typographer, but soon realised that his heart was set on following the path of an artist. Finally, Wiinblad was accepted onto the Graphic Programme at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and continued his artistic career there.
Although raised in Copenhagen, the style of Wiinblad was anything but "Danish". In contrast to the functionalism prevailing in Denmark, Wiinblad applied himself to imaginative and romantic art that was no longer limited to paper only. Quickly, Wiinblads’ art evolved from pure drawing to ceramic works.
Wiinblad autodidactically learned several ceramic techniques. But Wiinblad did not only use ceramics, but also upholstery, glass, textiles, posters as a canvas for his drawings and even complete hotel interiors have been adorned with the romantic, fairytale-like drawings by the Dane.
