The PH Artichoke is a classic masterpiece created by Poul Henningsen in 1958. Henningsen is regarded as one of the leading figures in artistic life in the period between the two world wars. His designs were already being produced by Louis Poulsen during his lifetime, and this has not changed to this day.
Almost as popular and undoubtedly just as stylistically confident as Henningsen's best-known work, the PH pendant lamp, is the Artichoke with its structure of twelve steel arches. On it, 72 leaves are placed in twelve circular rows, each with six leaves, which in combination are reminiscent of the shape of a cone.
As each row is offset from the previous one, all 72 leaves can "cover" each other, creating an all-round glare-free luminaire whose light source remains concealed from every perspective. The light is transmitted and reflected onto the leaves below, creating a distinct, unique illumination. The first Artichokes were developed for a restaurant in Copenhagen called Langelinie Pavilion - where they still hang today.
Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen, the son of the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He did not graduate as an architect, but studied at the Frederiksberg Technical School from 1911-1914 and then at the Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17. He also began to apply traditional functionalist architecture. However, his professional interest soon focused mainly on lighting design - and that is what he is famous for.
The Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen , founded in 1874, creates products that represent the duality of design and light. Every detail of a design serves a specific purpose. Every design begins and ends with light. Louis Poulsen offers a wide range of lighting options for indoor and outdoor use, covering both professional and residential use. Working closely with designers and architects such as Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Øivind Slaatto, Alfred Homann, Clara von Zweigbergk, nendo - Oki Sato and GamFratesi, Louis Poulsen has established itself as one of the most important global suppliers of architectural and decorative lighting.
To celebrate its 150th anniversary, Louis Poulsen is presenting an exclusive collection of iconic luminaires. They are characterized by a delicate pink shade on the inside of the shades and precious brass details that make them unique design pieces and coveted collector's items.
