Unikko was invented by Maija Isola in 1964 and has become an internationally recognized symbol of print design. Armi Ratia, the visionary founder of Marimekko , originally believed that it was not possible to capture the true essence of real flowers in print, which led to their exclusion from the Marimekko collections. As a result, Isola envisioned Unikko as a floral abstraction rather than a photorealistic representation. Today, Unikko is a strong symbol of joy and creativity that is seamlessly woven into the design identity of Marimekko .
