The Finnish Eero Aarnio, who became famous with his chair designs„Ball chair“ (1966), „Pastil chair“ (1967) and „Bubble chair“ (1968), is one of the great renewers of contemporaneous Scandinavian design. In 2011, he designed for Alessi a range of products that unifies classic, playful and paradox aspects of the world of design.
The comma-like watering can Diva is made of thermoplastic resin and has a capacity of nearly 1.5 litres of water. The curved shape of the can appears as if it was made of one piece. Quite incidentally, it creates all the parts of a watering can in a playful way and without showing any strain. Thus, Diva’s arched neck allows targeted and measured pouring of water and is a convenient carrying handle.
Eero Aarnio remembers: ”I still remember Alberto Alessi’s smile when, years ago, I presented my designs for the first time. Those included my watering can “Diva” and the bottle opener “Mouse” – both extremely practical and with a great fun factor. At the end of the day, those two objects were the first to enter production. My approach to product design leads through two fundamental processes: the study of the possibilities presented by new materials and a form of creativity that is in its essence derived from the feeling of penetrating the world of art time and time again without any constraints. I believe that new and surprising creations can only emerge if you combine these two approaches.”
