Like many of his other pieces of furniture, Alvar Aalto designed his Armchair 41 for a specific building: the armchair was originally designed for the clinic in Paimio, which gave the chair its name, but it quickly made its triumphal march around the world from there. Since the Armchair 41 Paimio is made entirely of birch wood, its silhouette is extremely slender. Due to the curved, soft birch wood, the armchair nevertheless has springy properties that make it more comfortable than it seems at first glance.
Thanks to these characteristics, the Armchair 41 Paimio became one of Aalto's most famous pieces of furniture. Artek pays tribute to this fact by dedicating the Paimio Icon Poster to the armchair. The German designer duo Greige has depicted the armchair in iconic form and pictogram-like, so that everyone can now bring the design classic into their home without taking up much living space.
