Dresser or sideboard? It is not always easy to tell the difference between the two types of furniture. But there are two distinguishing features that can be used for orientation: Firstly, sideboards are always wider than higher, while chests of drawers tend to be built higher up. Secondly, sideboards usually have combinations of open and closed elements such as drawers, sliding doors or wickerwork. Chests of drawers are often only fitted with drawers and have no open compartments.
Lowboards and highboards are variants of the sideboard and differ in height. The lowboard usually reaches to the knee and is well suited as a TV or Hi-Fi bench due to its low height.
The sideboard on the other hand has a height of 70-100 cm. Whilst it tends to be wider, the highboard focuses on storage space at the top. It is always higher than 100 cm, but lower than a classic cupboard.
Most sideboard designs have a maximum depth of 45 cm and are therefore perfect for narrow rooms. As a solitary piece of furniture, the sideboard always stands on the floor, so no wall mounting is necessary.
A sideboard is a real all-rounder and can be used in any room. It can be used for dishes in the kitchen, clothes in the bedroom, work utensils in the office, shoes in the hallway or small items in the living room.
Classical sideboards can be decorated with books, vases or figures, while large-format pictures or mirrors on the wall above them show off to best advantage.
Lowboards, on the other hand, are often seen in combination with TV sets. Receivers and cables can disappear behind the doors.
Highboards offer a lot of storage space inside. However, the decoration on the board should not be too lavish. Pictures that are too large often seem to be hung a bit high and stretch the overall appearance a bit too much into the vertical. It's better to arrange vases, small picture frames or a few plants on the highboard and make sure that the side view also looks attractive.
Not only can you decorate on the sideboard, but you can also set the stage for the design sideboard with small highlights inside.
"If you place an LED light in the sideboard with woven elements, you create a new kind of eye-catcher and make the entire sideboard shine." - Viktoria, furnishing expert
A stylish piece of designer furniture should naturally retain its beauty for as long as possible. With a little attention and care, high-quality sideboards made of wood and metal can be preserved. Lacquered surfaces require no more than a damp cloth, and wood care oil can be applied to oiled surfaces about once a year. Furniture wax is available for waxed surfaces and metal surfaces can be maintained particularly quickly with a damp cloth.
"Sideboards with semi-transparent wickerwork elements are particularly beautiful and absolutely trendy. The material mix is exciting, expressive and helps the solid solitaire furniture to be light, despite its ability to store things without any problems." - Viktoria, furnishing expert
