Der Eames Side Chair DSW ( D ining Height S ide Chair W ood Base) wurde 1948 von Charles und Ray Eames bei dem Wettbewerb ‚International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design‘ als Entwurf vorgestellt, gewann den zweiten Preis und ging nur wenig später in die Produktion. Die organisch geformte Sitzfläche wurde zunächst aus mit Fiberglasfasern verstärktem Polyesterharz gefertigt, das sich als besonders leicht formbar, komfortabel und angenehm in der Haptik erwies. Mit diesem für die Möbelindustrie neuem Material, gelang es den Designern, eine einzigartige Sitzschale im zeitlosen Design auf den Markt zu bringen.

At the beginning of the 90s, however, the production of fibreglass shells was discontinued for ecological reasons. Instead, the seat shells were now made of polypropylene. Many design lovers, however, noticed right from the start that the charm of the chairs is mainly due to the visible glass fibres in the material. Thanks to improved manufacturing processes, Vitra now returns years later to the roots of the DWS and offers the chair again in polyester resin with fibreglass reinforcement in some of the original colours.

Wooden frame

The basis is the typical four-legged wooden frame in different versions with filigree metal struts. Together with the fibreglass shell, it creates a harmonious mix of materials that blends perfectly into any ambience - whether at the dining table at home, in restaurants, canteens or public waiting areas.
