Alvar Aalto designed his Chair 69 in 1935 as a minimalist piece of furniture for the dining table. Like many of his chairs, the Finn also used L-shaped legs for his Chair 69 design, giving the chair its characteristic silhouette and allowing the frame to be attached directly to the seat.
The Chair 69 was initially designed, like the Stool 60 and other famous pieces of furniture by Aalto, for the library in Wyborg. It quickly began its triumphal march all around the world from there, and private individuals soon became impressed with the soft yet clear shapes of the piece.
Artek manufactures the Chair 69 from birch veneer, which in another step is varnished transparent. There are also versions with laminated or cushioned seats available.
