Reliable Seating for Everyone
The stackable Stool 60 was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933 and initially manufactured by O.y. Huonekalu – ja Rakennustyötehdas. After founding Artek in 1935, the stool was included in Artek’s standard range. The simple three-legged stool became a famous bestseller in the 1940s. The design that was initially created for the library in Viipuri soon made its way around the entire world.
Like the legs of the Viipuri chairs, the table legs are made of laminated birch wood bent into an L-shape: the first successes of Aalto’s experiments in bending laminated wood. The minimalist and functional design was revolutionary at the time. Instead of regular steel, the architect and designer Alvar Aalto used birch wood, which is widely available in Finland. For this reason, the unusual stool was also affordable for poorer families.
Today, the iconic stool is available in different versions. Alongside the Original Stool 60 by Alvar Aalto for Artek, re-editions, posters of the stool, children stools, special editions for special occasions and padded versions have since emerged over time. Until today, the Stool 60 has lost none of its original charm and convinces each day in innumerable households as a reliable seat for everyone.
