The Kay Bojesen monkey - between fantasy figure and design object
Kay Bojesen's wooden monkey with its mischievous face and light-colored belly has been transforming children's rooms into primeval forests and inspiring dreams since 1951. The excellent workmanship and the high-quality wood of the little monkey provide playtime fun for generations.
The wooden monkey is part of a collection of wooden animals created by designer Kay Bojesen between 1935 and 1957.
On television, the Kay Bojesen monkey has served as a mascot for nature programs and has also been a regular prize on quiz shows. The design bible Wallpaper even made the cheeky little monkey the epitome of Danish Design in 2008. Together with Kay Bojesen's other wooden animals, the wooden monkey occupies the unique borderline between fantasy figure and design object. Full of soul, humor, craftsmanship and with a mischievous twinkle in his eye - and thus an appeal to the playful child in all of us.
A wooden monkey with character
Kay Bojesen's wooden animals are now coveted collector's items, not only in children's rooms but also on shelves and in offices, and are passed down from one generation to the next. The animals are therefore the perfect gift idea - wherever people live and play: Christenings, birthdays, confirmations, graduations, weddings, anniversaries.
Throughout his life, Bojesen himself paid homage to the mantra that good design should be human, warm and lively: "They should be reminiscent of a circus" , is how he usually described his works, of which the charming wooden figures are among the most popular.
With his user-friendly and modern design language, Kay Bojesen is one of the great Danish functionalists. In his naive designs, form and object, seriousness and playfulness merge into one. At the same time, Bojesen had the unique ability to bring wood to life, which has made his works international design icons.
Anniversary edition in mosaic design
In spring 2021, Kaj Bojesen celebrates the 70th birthday of the unmistakable monkey. The special edition is made of upcycled wood, which is combined to create a beautiful mosaic and makes the timeless Bojesen classic so sustainable. The wooden monkeys have a special anniversary embossing on the base.
